Whether you have already booked your Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tickets or you are looking to buy them, the following information is a handy guide to where the theatre in London is located and how to get there.
Transport
London Underground Tube:
The nearest tube station to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane is Covent Garden on the Piccadilly Line (Royal Blue Line), but please be aware that Covent Garden is a very deep underground station and escalators are not in operation. Platform access is only by lift or stairs, due to high passenger numbers (16 million annually). London Underground advise travellers to get off at Leicester Square and walk the short distance to avoid the congestion. (The tube journey between Leicester Square and Covent Garden at less than 300 yards is London’s shortest.)
Other nearby tube stations within walking distance of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane are Charing Cross (Bakerloo and Northern line), Embankment (Bakerloo, Northern, District and Circle lines) and Holborn (Piccadilly and Central lines). All stations are under a ten-minute walk away from the Theatre Royal.
Train:
From the mainline stations we advise the following tube routes:
- Charing Cross – Northern line to Leicester Square (1 stop). It is also possible to walk from Charing Cross, which is just 800m away from the Theatre Royal.
- Euston – Northern line (Waterloo branch) to Leicester Square (4 stops) then change to the Piccadilly line to Covent Garden (1 stop)
- King’s Cross – Piccadilly line to Covent Garden (3 stops)
- Liverpool Street – Central line to Holborn (4 stops) then change to the Piccadilly line to Covent Garden (1 stop). It is possible to walk from Holborn tube station, which is 600m from the theatre, about an eight-minute walk. it is 0.4 miles to the theatre, approximately an eight minute walk.
- London Bridge – Northern line to Bank (1 stop) then change to Central line to Holborn (3 stops) then change to the Piccadilly line to Covent Garden (1 stop). It is possible to walk from Holborn tube station, which is 600m from the theatre, about an eight-minute walk. it is 0.4 miles to the theatre, approximately an eight-minute walk.
- St. Pancras – Piccadilly line to Covent Garden (3 stops)
- Waterloo – Northern line to Leicester Square (3 stops) then change to the Piccadilly line to Covent Garden (1 stop)

There are taxi ranks at all main-line stations and the cost of getting to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be roughly £8 to £11 depending on the time of day and which station you are travelling from. Bear in mind though that after the show everyone is leaving the theatre at the same time and most other London shows have similar end times so getting a taxi can sometimes be harder, especially if it is raining.
Bus:
The nearest bus routes are as follows:

Bicycle:
There are dedicated parking facilities for cyclists across Covent Garden including on Bedford Street and behind the Jubilee Market Hall.
Car:
There is ample and reliable public transport but some journeys have to be in a private car. Covent Garden is in the Congestion Zone but parking facilities are available with NCP. The £10 daily congestion charge for central London applies from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
The nearest car park to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane is in Chinatown near Leicester Square, approximately 800m from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a walk of approximately 10 minutes.
If you are planning to drive into London we recommend that you take advantage of Q-Park’s Theatreland Parking Scheme: simply have your car park ticket validated at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the 50% discount will automatically be applied when you pay at the car park pay machine. Participating car parks are as follows:
Chinatown (closest to Theatre Royal Drury Lane), Pimlico, Soho, Park Lane/Marble Arch, Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street
Coach:
Westminster City Council has remodelled existing kerb and road space at the base of Kingsway at Aldwych to create 24 coach bays within a short walking distance of Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Coaches will be charged at £4 per hour to use the Kingsway bays, 10am-4pm and 7pm to midnight. There is a four-hour maximum stay, which is ample time to enjoy Charlie and the Chocolate factory, which is expected to run for approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.
Transport from the Airports into London:
Heathrow
A tube service runs on the Piccadilly line, and will take you all the way to Covent Garden for £5, but could take up to 90 minutes. Therefore, the Heathrow Express overland train service is much faster, running every 15 minutes (starting on the hour) to Paddington. The fare is £13 single/£25 open return. From Paddington, take a tube or taxi towards the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
Gatwick
Train services run every 15 minutes to Victoria, but look out for the Gatwick Express service which is much faster. The fare is £11 single/£21.50 return. From Victoria take a tube or taxi onwards to the theatre.
Stansted
The Stansted Express train service runs to Liverpool Street every 15 minutes (on the hour). The fare is £13.80 single/£24 return. From Liverpool Street take a tube or taxi to the theatre.
Luton
Luton Thameslink train services run to Kings Cross Thameslink every 20 minutes. The fare is £9.50 single/£19 return. From Kings Cross take a tube or taxi.
Taxi:
There is a minimum fare on all taxi trips of £2.20, thereafter the taxi meter ticks over on the time and distance of the journey. London taxis offer great value as 5 passengers can all travel at no more cost than one person-as there are no extra charges for additional passengers or luggage.
