Forbidden Broadway – Show Description
Please note this show contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature. We would advise that the show is not suitable for under 12s and parents should exercise discretion if attending with older children.
Forbidden Broadway is an entertaining show that parodies musical theatre, particularly Broadway musicals. The hilarious cabaret revue spoofs musicals, actors, directors, characters and plots of contemporary musicals, mocking many of the Broadway classics, including The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Annie.
The original revue was conceived, written and directed by Gerard Alessandrini and was first played in 1982 in New York. In the ensuing years Forbidden Broadway has been numerously rewritten and has received more than 9,000 performances around the world.
Forbidden Broadway has transferred to the West End’s Vaudeville Theatre on September 9, 2014 and will run until November 22, 2014.
The show, which is currently running at the Menier Chocolate Factory, offers a paradoxical take on some recent West End productions, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Book of Mormon and Once.
Three of the cast members who played in the Menier Chocolate Factory run will transfer to the Vaudeville Theatre. Anna-Jane Casey, Damian Humbley and Ben Lewis will be joined by Christina Bianco, an American actress and singer who has already appeared in a US version of Forbidden Broadway.
The hilarious show has enjoyed a sell-out run at the Menier Chocolate Factory, where it has enjoyed a string of great reviews.
“Affectionate and delightfully malicious. Any longer and I’d have died laughing,” wrote the Mail on Sunday in its five star appraisal of the show.
In another five star accolade, Time Out described Forbidden Broadway as being “… So outrageously good it should be illegal.”
Talking of the critical response the show has received and the speed of ticket sales, Menier’s artistic director David Babani said he was “delighted and overwhelmed.”
“I can’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate our 10th anniversary year than to transfer our wonderful production to the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End so that many more people will get the opportunity to enjoy it,” said Babani.
For eleven weeks only you will be able to catch the West End and Broadway’s biggest stars be comically lambasted in this “Relentlessly, cleverly, breathtakingly funny” revue at the Vaudeville Theatre.
