Show description – Gypsy
Gypsy is a much-loved musical that is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the legendary burlesque entertainer who was famous for her striptease act. The iconic burlesque entertainer was also an author and playwright and her memoirs were made into a musical in 1959
.
The show tells the tale of Momma Rose and her two daughters, baby June and Louise when the three are trekking across the United States.
The moving story focuses on the dreams and efforts of Rose to bring up her daughters whilst juggling the hardships of life in show business.
As times are changing with the world of burlesque entertainment, audiences are expecting more. Rose’s daughters have agendas of their own ambitious agendas, meaning life is eternally changed for Momma Rose.
Gypsy has been described as a show about fading America, and a “relentlessly driven woman who refuses to fade with it”.
The production is directed by Jonathan Kent and sold out during its limited run at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
Momma Rose is played by the British actress Imelda Staunton. Staunton’s performance in Gypsy has been described as being “magnificent” and a “knock-out” and “nothing less than a triumph” by the Daily Telegraph.
Amidst a barrage of great reviews, The Times acknowledged the passion of the show:
“Staunton’s strength of determination makes this quite possibly the most exciting thing I have seen on stage. A truly great performance and a truly great show.”
Following its five-star run at the Chichester Festival Theatre, the highly acclaimed Gypsy is transferring to the Savoy Theatre.
With music by Julie Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and “showstopping” choreography from Stephen Mear, this modern production of Gypsy is running at the Savoy Theatre from March 30 to November 28, 2015.
