Show Description – Harlequinade
First performed at London’s Phoenix Theatre in 1948 as a double-bill alongside The Browning Version, this new production of Harlequinade is directed by Rob Ashford and is starring Kenneth Branagh and Zoë Wanamaker. The play takes the audience behind the scenes in the lunatic world of theatre, as Terence Rattingan affectionately celebrates the lunacy of putting on a play.
As well as performing in the show, Branagh will co-direct Harlequinade. And in addition to playing Dame Maud in Harlequinade, Zoë Wanamaker will also perform Terence Rattigan’s dramatic monologue All On Her Own, which has never before played in the West End. In this brief but powerfully atmospheric play, which will be performed every evening prior to Harlequinade, a woman with a secret, alone at midnight in London has a burden to share that is at times both heart-breaking and sinister. This never-before-seen double bill celebrates the contrast in Rattigan’s astonishing range.
Harlequinade is part of a series of plays put on by Kenneth Branagh’s own company, the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company. The series, titled Plays, sees Branagh work in collaboration with director Rob Ashford and designer Christopher Oram. A group of incredible actors are starring in the five plays, including Judi Dench, Rob Brydon, Richard Madden and Lily James.
