Made in Dagenham is a new musical written by Richard Bean, who previously wrote the Royal National’s phenomenal hit One Man, Two Guvnors. The show in London is based on the 2010 hit film of the same name, which in turn was based on the real events of the Ford sewing machinists strike of 1968.
The musical made its West End and world premiere on 5 November 2014 starring Gemma Arterton as Rita the leading lady, a machinist who sewed car seat covers at Ford’s Dagenham plant, who then struck out for women workers who took to the picket line in 1968 to end sexual discrimination over pay. Rita becomes an unlikely workers’ heroine, leading her colleagues in a dispute that went on to become a landmark in equal pay legislation.
Gemma Arterton starred opposite Daniel Craig in the 007 film Quantum Of Solace and studied singing as part of her training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
The music for Made in Dagenham the musical is provided by composer David Arnold, whose previous musical credits include the scores of several Bond films and he was musical director of the London Olympics closing ceremony. Lyricist is Richard Thomas whose previous credits include Jerry Springer The Opera and Anna Nicole Smith The Opera.
The show in London has been directed by Rupert Goold, who previously directed for the Royal Shakespeare Company and was responsible for the 2009 revival of Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane starring Rowan Atkinson.
