Show Description – Photograph 51
It has been 17 years since Nicole Kidman last played on the London stage when she made her critically-acclaimed West End debut. Now the celebrated Australian actress is stepping onto the London stage once more portraying British scientist Rosalind Franklin, who was responsible for much of the research and discovery work that led to the understanding of DNA’s double helix in the early 1950s.
However, Franklin’s name was void of the history books and she only gained recognition for the vital role she played in the discovery years after her death.
Photograph 51 is an Anna Ziegler play centred on the themes of isolation, ambition and the race for greatness. It is directed by Michael Grandage and reunites Kidman and Grandage following their recent alliance on the forthcoming film Genius.
Photograph 51 also sees the return of Grandage’s company to the West End, following its celebrated season at the Noel Coward Theatre in 2013/14. The season included Jude Law play Henry V and Daniel Radcliffe star in The Cripple of Inishmaan.
Michael Grandage said he was “thrilled” to be returning to the West End with Nicole Kidman in Photograph 51 during “such a vibrant time for London theatre.”
Nicole Kidman’s West End premiere in The Blue Room at the Donmar Warehouse in 1998 received great reviews, famously described as “pure theatrical Viagra.”
