One of Alan Ayckbourn’s greatest triumphs which premiered in the exciting times of London in 1967, Relatively Speaking is revived for 2013 as another one of the must-see shows in London in the calendar.
After spending 2012 in rep, the play opens on May 14th at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre, and the cast looks to attract casual and experienced theatre-goers in the play’s summer run.
The play Relatively Speaking follows the story of Greg and Ginny. With their love only a month old, Greg (played by Max Bennett) has decided Ginny is the right girl for him. She then tells him that she’s heading to visit her parents, which is the moment he has decided to ask her father for his daughter’s hand.
When he discovers an address written on a piece of paper, he follows Ginny (the graceful Kara Tointon) to Buckinghamshire. There he finds two people in the garden taking breakfast. As befits a farce, it appears that Philip and Sheila are not really Ginny’s parents. In fact, Philip is Ginny’s older lover and former boss, which gives the plot an extra piquancy. Played stylishly by Jonathan Coy and Felicity Kendal, the pair balance Greg and Ginny in a light four-hander.
Hilarity, social commentary and some bare skin from Ginny ensure this play deserves a new audience as it approaches fifty years since it was written, one which Noel Coward was moved to praise at the time. A fine example of revived West End shows in London, Relatively Speaking is next year’s go-to play for English farce in the country!
