A light-hearted musical, set in the decade of rock and glam metal
Since it was turned into a 2012 film starring Tom Cruise and Russell Brand, Rock of Ages has grown still further in popularity. Critics may turn their noses up, but anyone who wants to let their hair down should go – whether or not they have a lot of it!
The enthusiasm of the cast is unbounded, and they really get into the over-the-top spirit of the era it documents, especially Lonny, played by Simon Lipkin. Set in LA on the Sunset Strip, we are introduced to Drew, a guitarist who wants to rock, and Sherrie, a Kansas-born girl who wants to be an actress. While their relationship goes through its fumbling first stages, the club they go to, the Bourbon Room, is threatened with closure.
The fallen rock star Stacey Jaxx, formerly played on stage in London by Shayne Ward and played on screen by Cruise, returns to play the Bourbon Room stage, and intrigues Sherrie. As the plot continues its twists and turns, it is driven on by songs from the rock era, including Can’t Fight This Feeling by REO Speedwagon, the Foreigner tune Waiting for a Girl Like You and Whitesnake’s Here I Go Again, which brings the first half of the show to an uncertain close and sets up an intriguing second act.
Having played for over a year at the Shaftesbury Theatre, it moves a short walk away to the Garrick Theatre, rocking on into 2013! With a powerful five-piece band playing the songs onstage, and with the audience holding aloft lighters for the softer moments, Rock of Ages is one of the best nights of rock-inspired fun in the West End.
