The Importance of Being Earnest – New Material Written

The Importance of Being Earnest is perhaps Oscar Wilde’s most famous comedy play. In this 2014 production, the fictional Bunbury Company of Players, an ageing group of amateur actors, rehearse their upcoming performance of Oscar Wilde’s brilliant work. This production, a twist on the original piece with new material written, comes to the Harold Pinter theatre for a limited season only from the 27th June to the 20th September.

The cast is literally a who’s who of the finest acting fraternity including Nigel Havers (Downton Abbey, The Life Of Rock with Brian Pern, Coronation Street), Martin Jarvis (Endeavour, Law & Order: UK, Titanic), Cherie Lunghi (Passion Play, Secret Diary of a Call girl, The Manageress), Rosalind Ayres (Outnumbered, New Tricks, God and Monsters), Niall Buggy (Uncle Vanya, Dead Funny, Aristocrats), , Christine Kavanagh (Basket Case, Vera, Manchild), and Siân Phillips (Marlene, The Age of Innocence, Cabaret).
The Importance of Being Earnest is a farcical satire that lampoons the hypocrisies of Victorian society. The play features two bachelors, the dependable, John Worthing, J.P. and upper class playboy Algernon Moncrieff who maintain fictitious personæ in order to escape their burdensome social obligations. The two characters create different identities in order to pursue two eligible ladies, Cecily Cardew and Gwendolyn Fairfax. The hilarious misadventures which result from their subterfuge; their brushes with the redoubtable Lady Bracknell and the uptight Miss Prism results in a plot that twists and fizzles with an incredible witty dialogue that have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde’s most enduringly popular play.
This new show in London, The Importance of Being Earnest, is directed by Lucy Bailey (The Mysteries, Fortune’s Fool, Fings Ain’t Wot They Used To Be) and designed by William Dudley (Fortunes Fool, The Beggar’s Opera, Titus Andronicus).
