Bakersfield Mist
Stephen Sachs’ two-person comedy Bakersfield Mist, which had its world premiere at the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles, is booking for a strictly limited season only until the 9th August.
Sachs, who is also the artistic director of the Fountain, was inspired to write the play following the 2006 Harry Moses documentary about a trucker who buys what may be an original painting by world famous artist Jackson Pollock for just $3.
Bakersfield Mist stars the acclaimed Hollywood actress Kathleen Turner. Kathleen is best known for her role in hit films including Body Heat (1981), Romancing the Stone (1984), and Prizzi’s Honor (1985), the latter two earning her a Golden Globe for Best Actress. She has also starred in The War of the Roses (1989), Serial Mom (1994) and Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Kathleen famously stars in Friends as Chandler Bing’s cross-dressing father Charles Bing. Bakersfield Mist marks the return to the London stage of multi award-winner Kathleen Turner for the first time since her tour-de-force performance in Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
More recently Kathleen’s theatre performances have seen her being nominated for the Tony Award twice for her Broadway roles as Maggie in Cat On a Hot Tin Roof and as Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
Bakersfield Mist also stars veteran Scottish theatre actor, Ian McDiarmid renowned for his theatre work, Ian is an Olivier and Tony Award winner for his performances in Life of Galileo and Faith Healer. Ian has appeared in 47 films since 1976, but perhaps best known for his role in the Star Wars film series as Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine.
Bakersfield Mist is about a meeting between foul-mouthed, unemployed, trailer park-dwelling Maude Gutman, a fifty-something bar-tender who believes the painting she bought in a thrift store for $3 is really an undiscovered masterpiece worth millions, despite nearly trashing it and a stuffy New York art expert, Lionel Percy. Percy is a world-renown art expert who arrives from New York to authenticate the painting and evaluate the work, little does he know what he’s let himself in for. The drama is fiery and passionate and the comedy hilarious as they debate over class, truth, value, and the meaning of art.
“The running time for Bakersfield Mist at the Duchess Theatre is 85 minutes with no interval.”
