Relative Values show description
Noel Coward’s comedy play, Relative Values is scheduled for the Harold Pinter theatre in London for a limited season from Wednesday 19th March to Saturday 21st June. Relative Values is directed by the renown director, Sir Trevor Nunn.
Relative Values is one of Noel Coward’s most successful plays and is a satire of snobbery that depicts the clash of cultures between Hollywood film stars and the English aristocracy.
The comedy was first produced in London in 1951 with huge success and has enjoyed several revivals since and was made into a film in 2000.
Relative Values is set in the early 1950s, when the glittering world of Hollywood and the stiff upper lip of the English aristocracy meet with uproariously hilarious consequences.
There is consternation at Marshwood House when the young Earl of Marshwood announces that he is to marry a Hollywood film actress. But his family are plummeted in to further flux when they learn that the actresses sister is none other than the Earl’s mother’s maid.
In an attempt to cope with this deeply embarrassing situation, Moxie the maid is dressed up in her ladyship’s finest cast-offs as the aristocratic family endeavours to pass her off as one of their own.
“The ancient and inaccurate assumption that, as we are equal in the eyes of God, we should be equal in the eyes of our fellow creatures.”
