Being Shakespeare show description

The legendary star of stage and screen Simon Callow brings to life Shakespeare’s unforgettable characters and the real man behind the legend in Jonathan Bate’s new play, Being Shakespeare.

Recently hailed for his performance as Sir Toby Belch in the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed sold-out production of Twelfth Night, Simon Callow, star of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love and Room with a View, stars in Being Shakespeare at the Harold Pinter theatre in London for a strictly limited season from the 26th February to the 15th March only.
The play is staged as the seven ages of Shakespeare with Simon Callow portraying Shakespeare as a schoolboy at Stratford grammar school, focusing on Shakespeare’s fascination with soldiers, from Henry V to Coriolanus.
Being Shakespeare sees Simon Callow as Shakespeare preoccupied with injustice, as well as being hilarious, as he portrays a variety of characters from the bumptious Bottom through the earthily realistic Falstaff, the psychotic madman Mercutio, and the world-weary Macbeth to a strange and surreal Puck.
This is a hugely entertaining take on both Shakespeare, his life and his work.

Being Shakespeare is written by Jonathan Bate the pre-eminent Shakespeare biographer and editor of the RSC’s Shakespeare: The Complete Works.

Directed by Tom Cairns whose previous credits include the Old Vic’s All About My Mother, the National Theatre’s Aristocrats and Cocteau’s Voices at the Royal Opera House.
