With screaming reviews and standing ovations night after night West End audiences will sorely miss I Can’t Sing!, which is to close early
The final curtain soon to be drawn on I Can’t Sing!
Inspired by The X Factor and co-written by comedian Harry Hill, I Can’t Sing! had every characteristic of being a long-running West End success. Despite opening to a string of great reviews, such as The Telegraph’s sentiment of the show being “wildly eccentric and often wonderfully funny,” the comic musical is to close after just two months.
In a press statement, Rebecca Quigley, CEO of Stage Entertainment UK, co-producers of I Can’t Sing! spoke of the sadness over the show’s demise.
“We are sad to be bringing I Can’t Sing! to a close but are immensely proud to have co-produced the show.”
“The West End can be an unpredictable place as the closure of a number of high profile productions recently has shown. I Can’t Sing! Has had audiences on their feet night after night, four and five star reviews from the critics and an amazing company and creative team, but it seems that isn’t always enough,” continued Rebecca Quigley
A mickey-taking spectacular
I Can’t Sing! opened at the London Palladium in March this year. The talent show musical spoof is directed by Sean Foley, a double Olivier Award winner. Former EastEnders actor Nigel Harman plays Simon Cowell. Though what got critics and audiences really hyped up about The X Factor parody is the fact it was written by BAFTA Award-winning comedian Harry Hill. Harry described the musical as a “mickey-taking spectacular.”
Nigel Hall of Syco Entertainment, which co-produced I Can’t Sing! With Stage Entertainment spoke of his immediate enthusiasm when he heard about the idea for the tongue-in-cheek reality TV musical.
“From the moment Harry Hill and Steve Brown told us their idea for I Can’t Sing! We knew this was going to be a fun project. Alongside Stage Entertainment we’d like to thank the cast and crew who have worked so hard on this show,” said Nigel Hall. “I’d like to say a huge thanks and the very best of luck with their next venture.”
A recent spate of early West End closures
I Can’t Sing! joins a number of leading musicals on the West End to have closed early in recent weeks, including Sir Time Rice’s From Here to Eternity and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Stephen Ward.
