Famed for his iconic Royal Shakespeare performances and his role in the legendary film classic Four Weddings and a Funeral, Simon Callow steps into the shoes of Jesus. This one-man show examines the character of Jesus of Nazareth.
Simon Callow, one of the UK’s most well-known and admired actors, steps back two thousand years and relives some of the extraordinary key moments in the life of Jesus, though the eyes of the people who knew him best of all.
Callow dips into multiple characters to provide an eye-witness portrayal of Jesus. The play hears stories from several of the characters who were closest to Jesus, including John the Baptist, the fisherman Simon, Judas and Jesus’ half-brother Jacob.
Talking about his motivation for the compelling drama, playwright Matthew Hurt said:
“Since childhood I’ve been attracted to the stories of the Bible. Whenever I go back to re-read them, I’m struck by how unexpected, almost unknowable, they are – even the familiar ones. What I hope we are able to do with The Man Jesus is take us back to the precise moment in history when he was living an experience his story as I imagine it felt and looked to the characters around him.”
Thought-provoking yet full of wit, The Man Jesus has enjoyed a string of great reviews and has been propelled to high acclaim since it premiered at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast.
