Kristen Scott Thomas to play Queen Elizabeth II at the Apollo Theatre

British playwright Peter Morgan’s highly acclaimed comedy is directed by Stephen Daldry. It is centred on Queen Elizabeth II’s weekly meetings – known as ‘audiences’ – with her prime ministers from her accession in 1952 to the present day. From Winston Churchill to David Cameron, each of the prime ministers present at the ‘audiences’ uses these private conversations as a, sometimes explosive, confessional and a sounding board. As she consoles, advises and even teases the prime ministers, the Queen reveals her own identity and personality.

A portrayal of the second Elizabethan Age

The Audience offers a comical portrayal of the second Elizabethan Age. As Britain’s Prime Ministers come and go through the incessantly revolving door of a democratically-elected government, the Queen remains steadfast and dependable.

Kristen Scott Thomas stepping into Helen Mirren’s shoes

Kristen Scott Thomas will step into the role formerly played by Helen Mirren. Scott Thomas is well known to West End audiences and is currently playing the title role in Sophecles’ Electra in the Old Vic. In 2008 the multi-award-winning theatre and film actor won an Olivier Award when she appeared on the West End in The Seagull.

The Audience premiered in February 2013 in the West End at the Gielgud Theatre. The production will have a limited run on Broadway from February until June, 2015, where Helen Mirren will reprise the role of Queen Elizabeth II.

Stephen Daldry’s production of The Audience will preview at the Apollo Theatre from 21 April 2015 until the 25 July 2015. A press night will take place on May 5, 2015.
