The Audience – Show description
Written by the British playwright and screenwriter Peter Morgan, The Audience is focused on weekly meetings between Queen Elizabeth II and the different prime ministers from the Queen’s accession in 1952 until the present day. These weekly meetings are known as ‘audiences’.
The comic play covers Elizabeth II’s meetings with each of her 12 prime ministers at Buckingham Palace. An agreement has been made that both parties must not utter a word of what has been spoken at the meeting, not even to their spouses. During these assemblies, the prime ministers confess often intimate admissions to the Queen, who, as she advises, consoles and sometime teases, reveals her own personality.
As the politicians come and go through the Queen’s embracement, The Audience traces the arc of the second Elizabethan Age, from the beginning of Elizabeth II’s reign until today.
The Audience premiered in February 2013 at the Gielgud Theatre, where Helen Mirren led the cast as Queen Elizabeth II. Mirren will reprise her role in February 2015 on Broadway.
During its run at the Apollo Theatre the multi award-winning theatre and film actor Kristen Scott Thomas will step into Helen Mirren’s shoes and play Queen Elizabeth II. The Four Weddings and a Funeral star’s most recent acclaim is playing the title role in Sophocles’ Electra and the Old Vic.
The play is written by Peter Morgan. The British playwright received Oscar and BAFTA nominations for his screen play The Queen, which also starred Helen Mirren. The Queen won a string of international awards, including the Evening Standard British Film Awards, the British Independent Film and the Golden Globe.
The Audience is directed by Stephen Daldry whose career began at the Sheffield Crucible Theatre. Daldry’s most recent success was his West End production of David Hare’s Skylight, which ran at the Wyndham Theatre.
The Audience will play at the Apollo Theatre from 21 April 2015 – 25 July 2015.
