Bend It Like Beckham – Show Description
13 years after the success of the film Bend It Like Beckham, which launched the careers of Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra, a stage adaptation has come to the West End. The Musical is running at the Phoenix Theatre.
The story, which explores some hard-hitting issues including religion, sexual identity and interracial relationships, will be set in 2001. Like the film, the musical follows the lives of an 18-year-old Sikh teenager and her friend who both live in London and are infatuated with playing football. Such is the youngster’s obsession with the game that she defies her parents’ wishes and joins a local football team. Together with her friend, the two girls set out to make careers as professional footballers, in spite of their families’ disdain.
The music for this musical version of the box office smash hit film is by Howard Goodall and lyrics by Charles Hart. The choreography and musical staging is by Aletta Collins. The Bend It Like Beckham musical has a new book by Paul Mayeda Berges and Gurinda Chadha. It will also by directed by the award-winning director Gurinder Chadha. Sharing her excitement of crafting a stage version of Bend It Like Beckham, Chadha said:
“Developing Bend It Like Beckham for the stage has been the most enjoyable creative process of my career so far. It was my always my intention to build on the film and to present its themes and storylines to live audiences in an exciting new dynamic way.”
The director explained how she has been inspired by musicals ever since she was a little girl. Chadha described the musical as “part West End, part London Punjack, but whole heartedly British,” saying the show will be a “totally new kind of musical.”
