Show description – Harvey

Harvey is a comedy written in 1944 by the American playwright Mary Chase. After the play premiered on Broadway, Mary Chase received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1945.

The much-loved comedy has gone on to be adapted for film, television and various stage productions.

The plot is centred on Elwood P. Dowd who has one major flaw in his personality. The affable Elwood is friends with an invisible rabbit who is six foot tall and goes by the name Harvey.

Elwood introduces his friend Harvey to everyone he meets, something his wannabe socialite sister, Veta finds increasingly embarrassing. So cringing does Veta find her brother’s invisible friend antics that she decides to have him committed to a sanatorium.

Though instead of committing Elwood to the hospital, the young, handsome and extremely flirtatious Dr, Sanderson commits Veta…

The revival of Mary Chase’s comedy is running at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from 17 March – 2 May, 2015, following a short UK tour.

Maureen Lipman will reprise her role from the tour playing Veta. James Dreyfus will also retain his performance in Harvey, playing Elwood P. Dowd. Lipman and Dreyfus will star alongside David Bamber, Desmond Barrit and Ingrid Oliver.

This adaptation of Harvey is directed by Lindsay Posner.
