Seasons of Larson explores the life and work of the legendary American composer Jonathan Larson in a one-off show at the West End’s Lyric Theatre

The concert celebrates the life of the iconic composer Jonathan Larson

On 25 January 1996, the Broadway composer Jonathan Larson died unexpectedly on the night of the first preview of his anticipated rock opera Rent. The composer had waited seven years for Rent to be brought to stage.

Larson was well known for exploring poignant social issues, including homophobia, multiculturalism and addiction. His opera Rent was fresh, provocative and exuberant, based on the classic Puccini opera ‘La Boheme’.

The opera became an instant hit on Broadway where it remained for 12 years, becoming the tenth longest-running show in Broadway’s history and propelling Larson to a legendary status. In 1996, Larson’s Rent went on to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Musical in the same year.

Sadly, Jonathan Larson never experienced the huge impact his work had on a generation of young performers and artists and the prolific popularity and longevity of his show Rent.

Seasons of Larson sees an exciting company of West End performers come together in an exhilarating exploration and celebration of the young Broadway composer’s life and influential work.

20 years to the day of the composer’s death, Seasons of Larson is showing at the Lyric Theatre on Monday 25 January 2016 starting at 8pm. The concert lasts for one hour 50 minutes, including one interval.
