It has been confirmed that the award-winning actress Gemma Arterton is taking the title role of Nell Gwynn. Arterton is no stranger to the West End having recently played Rita O’Grady in Made In Dagenham, a role that earned her the title of Best Newcomer in a Musical at the Evening Standard Awards.

A sell-out hit

Directed by Christopher Luscombe, Nell Gwynn has been referred to as an “effervescent celebration of life in the theatre.”

During its 11 sell-out performances at the Shakespeare’s Globe, the production generated a whirl of excitement and celebratory reviews.

The Times described the play as “A delight, silly and serious… full of crowd pleasers, lifting music and sumptuous costumes… there is even a dog,” enthusiasm shared by the Daily Mail, which said the play, “Falls between Restoration comedy, My Fair Lady, Carry On films and Blackadder.”

Nell Gwynn is showing at the Apollo Theatre on the West End from Thursday 4 February 2016 until Saturday 30 April 2016. The show runs for 2 hours 35 minutes, including one interval. Due to some references of a sexual nature it is not suitable for the under 12s.
