Show Description – The Libertine
Olivier and Tony Award winner Terry Johnson directs Stephen Jeffreys’ hedonistic drama The Libertine. Dominic Cooper is returning to the West End playing the debauched yet charismatic Earl of Rochester, who has a well-known hungriness for excess.
Written by Stephen Jeffreys, The Libertine tells the true story of John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester. Wilmot was also a playwright and poet, notorious for his passion for indulgence. Though when he encounters a certain actress at the Playhouse, the Earl is forced to reconsider his ways.
The role of the second Earl of Rochester was made famous by Johnny Depp in the film adaptation of the story in 2004.
The production is praised as being full of flair and wit that is both a “wild period piece and an incisive critique of life in an age of excess.”
