The legendary actors will star as two ageing writers in a new production of Pinter’s comic masterwork No Man’s Land

The iconic duo will reunite at the Wyndham’s Theatre in No Man’s Land

Directed by Sean Mathias, a long-term collaborator with McKellen, No Man’s Land is to tour the UK before arriving at the Wyndham’s Theatre on the West End.

This will be the first time the much-loved actors have performed together since 2013, when they starred in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.

No Man’s Land will see the acting legends play Hirst and Spooner, two ageing writers who embark on a heavy drinking session in a Hampstead pub and continue becoming increasingly inebriated in Hirst’s stately home. As the drink flows, what begins as invigorating conversation turns into an unnerving power game.

Following its premiere at the National Theatre, No Man’s Land first performed at the Wyndham’s Theatre in 1975, starring John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson.

A ‘glowing revival’

During its run on Broadway, the new production of Pinter’s masterpiece was met with much acclaim, described as an “Irresistible celebration of two actors’ love affairs with their scripts” by the New York Times and hailed by Time Out New York as “Harold Pinter’s masterpiece is back in a glowing revival.”

Patrick Stewart, who will play Hirst in the production, spoke of when he saw the original production of No Man’s Land, he vowed to star in the play.

“I made a promise to myself that one day I would play Spooner or Hirst but to be doing it back at Wyndham’s with Ian McKellen was I fantasy I never entertained.”

Sharing Stewart’s enthusiasm, Ian McKellen said:

“Playing Spooner to Patrick’s Hirst on Broadway was a constant joy, which is why I am delighted to be back with him in the West End.”

Following a UK tour, No Man’s Land will head to the Wyndham’s Theatre on 8 September where it will stay until 17 December, 2016.
