“The Book of Mormon” looks to cross the Atlantic and is set to open in London’s Prince of Wales Theatre with previews set for 25th February 2013. The controversial yet multi-Tony award winning musical, written by the creators of South Park Trey Parker and Matt Stone, has become one of Broadway’s hottest tickets and is now going to hit the West End in early 2013.
“The Book of Mormon” is a religious satire musical, ridiculing organized religion and traditional musical theatre, reflecting the creators’ lifelong lure to Mormonism. The musical tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries sent to a remote Ugandan village where a brutal warlord is threatening the local population. The two missionaries then attempt to share the biblical scripture (Book of Mormon) but have trouble connecting with the locals, who at that point are more concerned with war, famine and poverty, than religion.
Since opening on Broadway in March 2011, it has gained a critical but positive response, as I’m sure it will be received when it hits the West End early next year. If the controversial humour of South Park is your thing, “The Book of Mormon” is not one to be missed!
