Spend an evening at the Kit Kat Club
Rufus Norris’ imagining of Cabaret returns to the London stage at the Savoy theatre. Norris’s 2006 production of this Kander and Ebb musical classic won huge critical acclaim, as well as two Olivier awards. This year, it returns to the West End.
The musical stars pop prince Will Young in his debut West End role as Emcee, made famous by Joel Grey in the classic 1972 movie version of the show. The female lead role of Sally Bowles is held by Michelle Ryan, most well known for playing Zoe in EastEnders and Jamie Sommers in The Bionic Woman.
Based on the stories of Christopher Isherwood and the play by John Van Druten, Cabaret is written by Joe Masteroff, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It premiered on Broadway in 1966 and was made into an Oscar-winning film starring Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles and Michael York as Cliff.
Set in 1930s Berlin, when the Nazis were rising to power, the musical focuses around nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub. The story follows 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw, with a subplot involving the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub, a venue which serves as a constant metaphor for the threatening state of late Weimar Germany throughout the show.
Cabaret features show-stopping choreography by Olivier Award winner Javier de Frutos, dazzling costumes and some of the most iconic songs in musical theatre including Money Makes The World Go Round, Two Ladies, Maybe This Time and the renowned title song.
Please note that this production contains adult themes and some nudity and therefore is unsuitable for under 8 year olds.
