It has been announced that a revival of Edward Albee’s The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? is coming to the Theatre Royal Haymarket in spring 2017
Damian Lewis will star in The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? at the Theatre Royal Haymarket
Homeland star Damian Lewis will perform in the award-winning play, which won the Tony Award for Best New Play when it premiered in 2002 on Broadway. Lewis was last seen on the London stage when he starred in David Mamet’s American Buffalo in 2015.
Playwright Edward Albee passed away last month, aged 88. The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? will be the second revival of an Edward Albee play to show on the West End since the playwright’s death.
The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? is a dark comedy that explores the demise of familial relationships. Damian Lewis will play Martin, a highly regarded architect, whose wife and teenage son struggle to come to terms that Martin has fallen in love with a goat – A goat named Sylvia!
In 2002, when the play premiered, Edward Albee described The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? saying:
“What can I tell you about it? It’s one long act, three scenes, four characters and a goat… there’s a real goat and also a person who becomes a scapegoat. It is a play that seems to be one thing at the beginning, but the chasm opens as we go further into it. And I think it is going to shock and disgust a number of people, with any luck, there will be people standing up, shaking their fists during the performance and throwing things at the stage. I hope so!”
The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? will open at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on April 5, 2017, with previews from March 24.
