Shows in London are delighted to announce a new comedy opening in London’s West End next year.
Clive Exton’s new comedy, Barking in Essex stars comedian Lee Evans and renown actress Sheila Hancock. The show in London previews at Wyndham’s Theatre from the 6th September 2013 before the world premiere on Monday 16 September 2013,
Lee Evans is the hyperactive rubber-faced comedy genius, most famous as a stand-up comedian but also a star of stage and screen. His credits include The Producers both at the cinema and in the West End theatre plus Endgame, The Dumb Waiter, Mousehunt and There’s something about Mary. If you think Lee Evans is just all about comedy and you haven’t seen the film Freeze Frame, I recommend it highly, as Evans portrayal of a chilling oddball is fantastic.
Dame Sheila Hancock is acting royalty and has appeared in numerous theatre productions, including The Last of the Duchess, Sister Act and The Birthday Party and numerous T.V. shows including a stint in Eastenders.
The story centres on Algie Packer, Essex’s most notorious gangster. After seven years in prison freedom finally beckons for Algie. He’s done his time and now he’s coming home to collect his loot, some £3.6 million in supposedly untraceable banknotes. The Packers are Essex’s lovable, but most dysfunctional, family and there’s something Algie’s family have forgotten to tell him…
Evans plays the hapless, dim-witted Darnley, the village idiot of the criminal underworld. Sheila Hancock is Emmie, his fearsome mother affectionately known as the family’s Rottweiler with a hairdo.
Witness the Packers as they desperately attempt to cover their tracks before Algie arrives home to collect what he thinks is rightfully his.
Barking in Essex promises to be a diabolically funny new play by Clive Exton, the acclaimed writer of 10 Rillington Place, Poirot and Jeeves and Wooster, and is directed by Harry Burton (The Dumb Waiter, The Leisure Society).
