From Here to Eternity is the new show in London coming to the Shaftesbury theatre in the heart of the West End in September this year.
The show is a stage adaptation of the 1953 epic film From Here to Eternity starring Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Ernest Borgnine and Donna Reed. The film itself was based on the book From Here to Eternity by James Jones.
The film, From Here to Eternity, won an amazing 8 Oscars out of 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best supporting Actor for Frank Sinatra and Best Supporting Actress for Donna Reed.
The iconic scene from the film From Here to Eternity is of course Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr classic love embrace rolling around in the surf on the beach. I wonder how they will capture that scene on the stage in the theatre?
Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity
The story revolves around a regiment of U.S. soldiers stationed in Hawaii in the months prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in World War Two.

Captain Holmes urges Prewitt to join the boxing team to help win the regimental boxing trophy. Prewitt refuses, the Captain retaliates by making his army life hell. Unable to break Prewitt’s spirit, Holmes orders Sergeant Warden to prepare court martial papers. Warden, however, suggests they increase his company punishment. The other officers assist in the conspiracy. Prewitt is supported only by his friend, Private Angelo Maggio.
Meanwhile, Sergeant Warden begins an affair with the Captain’s neglected wife Karen, so further increasing the complications and subterfuge.
The tension increases with various confrontations between officers and the soldiers. Underlying liaisons and love affairs stretch the tension further still and cause animosities between the soldiers. Aggression spills over in to open fights, ultimately with tragic consequences.
