The Bodyguard the musical at the Adlephi theatre in London
The Bodyguard has received six nominations in all for the What’s On Stage Awards 2013. As well as Heather Headley being nominated for Best Actress in a musical, Lloyd Owen has also received a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.
The What’s On Stage Awards are the only major UK theatre awards to be decided by the ticket-buying audience. So it is somewhat of a surprise that the Bodyguard has received so many nominations as it only had its opening night at the Adelphi theatre in London’s West End on the 5th December 2012.
Based on the 1992 film with songs by Whitney Houston the original film soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The stage musical features many of Whitney Houston’s greatest hits, including I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Saving All My Love and One Moment in Time, as well as the legendary I Will Always Love You, which became the biggest selling single by a female artist in music history. Sadly Whitney passed away in February 2012 so she won’t be able to see the legacy of her musical.
Amongst the prestigious awards that The Bodyguard has been nominated for also include;
Best New Musical, Best Director for Thea Sharrock, Best Set Designer for Tim Hatley, which is not surprising seeing the amazing special effects and lighting and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for Debbie Kurup.
