From Here to Eternity the musical is the new Tim Rice and Stuart Brayson show in London. The musical is a stage adaptation of the 1953 epic film From Here to Eternity starring Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Ernest Borgnine and Donna Reed. The film itself was based on the book From Here to Eternity by James Jones.

It’s Pearl Harbor, 1941, where the girls sing “don’cha like Hawaii”, the men of rifle platoon, G Company sing the blues, and where even on an army base in the middle of paradise, or rather Hawaii, love and desire are never very far away. The troubled and misunderstood Private Prewitt falls head over heels in love with the kind hearted escort club girl Lorene. His commanding platoon officer, Sergeant Warden, embarks on a dangerous affair with his commanding officer’s wife, Karen. The scene is set From Here to Eternity on an explosive collision course, the lives of both men are on a path they cannot control. Love, anger, fury and passion all against the backdrop of the approaching World War II, the worlds of the four lovers and the soldiers of G Company are dramatically tested, tensed and finally ripped apart in this dramatic but poignant musical epic that promises to set the London stage alight.

Don’t miss the world premiere of Tim Rice’s magnificent new epic musical From Here To Eternity. Adapted from one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, this gripping tale of illicit love and army life is a breathtaking, romantic and excitingly original new show in London that is set to join the front rank of great London musical shows.

The iconic scene from the film From Here to Eternity is of course Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in their classic love embrace rolling around in the surf on the beach.

The story revolves around a regiment of U.S. soldiers stationed in Hawaii in the months prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in World War Two. The intimacy of all being cooped up on a paradise island and the trials and tribulations that escalate.

From Here to Eternity is set in 1941, Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt is transferred to rifle Company “G,” based on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Captain Holmes, knowing that Prewitt is a proficient boxer, urges Prewitt to join the boxing team to help win the regimental boxing trophy. Prewitt refuses, but does not divulge his reasons. The  Captain is incensed and retaliates by making his army life hell.

Unable to break Prewitt’s spirit, Holmes orders Sergeant Warden to prepare court martial papers. Warden, however, suggests they increase his company punishment in order to change Prewit’s mind. The other officers assist in the conspiracy. Prewitt is supported only by his friend, Private Angelo Maggio.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Warden begins an affair with the Captain’s neglected wife Karen, so further increasing the complications and subterfuge.

The tension increases with various confrontations between officers and the soldiers. Underlying liaisons and love affairs stretch the tension further still and cause animosities between the soldiers. Maggio is picked on by a barrack sergeant, but is saved by Warden. The aggression spills over in to open fights, ultimately with tragic consequences. I won’t spoil your enjoyment by giving away the ending.
