Fans of Edward Albee’s iconic play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf are in for a treat, as it has been announced a new production of the play is to show on the West End in 2017
Imelda Staunton to star in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf at the Harold Pinter Theatre
Adding to the excitement is the confirmation that the incredible, three-time Olivier Award winning Imelda Staunton is to lead the cast, playing the role of Martha.
Staunton will be joined by the talented Game of Thrones star Conleth Hill, who is playing George in the revival, Martha’s husband.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is set at a college campus in America. George is an associate history professor at the college and Martha is the daughter of the college’s president. Following a faculty party, Martha invites Nick and Honey, a younger couple, back to their home for some after-party drinks.
As the alcohol flows and dawn approaches, Nick and Honey are drawn into Martha and George’s explosive rows and are forced to watch some bitter truths unfold.
Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf was originally shown in 1962. In 1963 the play was selected to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. However, due to its adult themes and strong language, the Pulitzer Prize selection was withdrawn by the advisory committee.
The news of the Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf revival follows the sad passing of the much-loved playwright Edward Albee, who died aged 88 following a short illness.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is directed by James Macdonald, who has recently worked with Imelda Staunton when he directed Circle at the Royal Court Theatre.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is showing for a limited 13-week run at the Harold Pinter Theatre, from Wednesday 22 February until Saturday 27 May, 2017.
Due to strong language and adult themes, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is recommended for ages 12 and upwards. Under-fives will strictly not be admitted.
