Charlie and the Chocolate Factory breaks Box Office records

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical has amazingly broken ticket sales records both for the West End and the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

With Christmas fast approaching and just six months after the opening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane the show in London has set a new West End theatre record.

The week ending the 2nd November saw ticket sales reach the highest weekly gross receipts for a West End theatre. Over that week almost 20,000 people saw the musical at Theatre Royal Drury Lane achieving a record ticket sales revenue in excess of  £1 million. This figure also breaks the show’s own Drury Lane record set in August 2013. The show has now taken over £21 million in ticket sales and is now booking a year in advance.

A special gala performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a firm children’s favourite, was hosted by Sir Terry Wogan in aid of BBC’s Children in Need appeal.

The making of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, directed by award-winning Skyfall director Sam Mendes was featured in the opening episode of Channel 4’s new four-part series The Story of Musicals. The cast will also star in this year’s Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium, to be screened on ITV in December.

Olivier and Tony Award-winning actor Douglas Hodge stars as Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 25th June 2013.

Featuring ingenious stagecraft, the wonder of the original story that has captivated the world for almost 50 years is brought to life with music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and amazing set and costume designs by Mark Thompson.

Starring alongside Douglas Hodge, the cast includes former Young One Nigel Planer as Grandpa Joe, seasoned theatre actor Clive Carter as Mr Salt, former Eastender Paul J Medford as Mr Beauregarde and celebrated comedy actor Billy Boyle as Grandpa George.

Tickets for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are now on sale through to November 2014.
