The worldwide entertainer Des O’Connor,80, received a standing ovation for his debut performance in the Wizard of Oz. The TV legend was making his 1,285th appearance at the London Palladium but his first as the star of a musical. He appeared alongside a cast including Sophie Evans, the runner-up in the BBC show Over The Rainbow.

This new role follows a worldwide career, including performances at The Royal Opera House and the sale of over 16 million records during his singing career recording 36 albums.

O’Connor made his West End debut last year in “Dreamboats and Petticoats”, and now he succeeds Russell Grant in the title role of the Wizard for the final running period of the show ending late this year. Following the ovation-worthy opening performance, he mused “The funny thing is, I may have done over 1,200 performances at the Palladium but I’m still in with a chance of winning best newcomer”, truly showing off the extent of Des O’Connor’s career, over 4 decades of entertainment.
