Disney’s new musical Aladdin has opened at the Prince Edward theatre in London’s West End.
I took my 16 and 18 year old daughters to see the show, and we weren’t disappointed.
Our fear was that the show may have been aimed too much at the younger audience, but our fears were completely dispelled after enjoying a truly tremendous feel good musical.
The star of the show is undoubtedly Trevor Dion Nicholas as the Genie, he has stage presence and charisma in abundance, and boy, what a powerful voice! His energy and enthusiasm is breath taking.
The ‘One Jump Ahead’ number at the start of Act One does perhaps need some revision, it needs to be tighter, but apart from that the musical was as slick and as professional as one would expect from Disney, with lavish costumes, an ingenious set, incredible lighting and effects but above all a wonderful cast, stylish choreography, fantastic songs and enough six packs on view to keep everyone happy.
Basically Aladdin is a love story and the story moves along at a pace in this magical musical. Jafar is a suitably camp villain with his comedic side kick Iago providing the laughs. Aladdin and Princess Jasmine provide the romance with Trevor Dion Nicholas providing the stardust sparkle. From the fantastic ‘Diamond in the Rough’, through a wonderful ‘A Friend Like Me’ culminating in an incredible lavish act one finale Aladdin the musical is musical theatre at its best.
The second act highlight is ‘A Whole New World’ with the magic carpet and the simple yet stunning set which creates an enchanting, magical atmosphere which certainly elevates Aladdin in to a whole new world of romance.
We left the theatre on a high and would certainly recommend this show for anyone looking for a fun or romantic night out, it has something for everyone and is set to run for years. Book your tickets for Disney’s Aladdin now.
