The Chichester Festival Theatre’s production of the hit musical comedy will run simultaneously with a UK tour showing throughout Britain until the end of July.
Guys and Dolls is a vibrant celebration of the Prohibition-era in New York, which first premiered on Broadway in 1950. The multi-award winning musical was riveted to international fame when, in 1958, it was made into a movie, starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra.
Guys and Dolls follows the stories and characters of American journalist and author Damon Runyon, best known for his short stories celebrating the vibrancy of Broadway developed in the Prohibition era.
The story is set in New York, where small time gambler Nathan Detroit needs to locate a $1,000 in order to rent a venue to host a game of Craps. As a means of generating the funds, Nathan hedges a bet with fellow gambler Sky Masterson, challenging him to have dinner with the uptight Evangelist Sergeant Sarah Brown.
Directed by Gordon Greenberg, Guys and Dolls features classic hits, including Luck Be A Lady, My Time of Day and Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat.
As The Guardian wrote in its review of the production on the West End:
“London love Guys and Dolls – maybe more so than New York.”
Testament to London’s love-affair with Fran Loesser’s iconic romantic comedy musical is the fact Guys and Dolls is extending its West End life by transferring to the Phoenix Theatre.
Guys and Dolls opens at the Phoenix Theatre on 19th March 2016 where it is currently booking until October 2016. The production will replace Bend It Like Beckham, which closes on 5 March 2016.
