Just in: Cadbury’s open factory to rival Willy Wonka’s Factory

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical

Perhaps the most famous chocolate factory in the U.K. is Cadbury World, but this will soon change when Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical opens for business at the Drury Lane Theatre in London’s West End. So how do the two chocolate factories compare?

At Cadbury World you may uncover a world of chocolate delights, but perhaps you won’t quite experience the magic of a trip to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Here chocolate really comes to life with chocolate fountains and chocolate rivers, which are so irrestible you just want to jump in, as poor Augustus Gloop did.

Contrary to popular belief Cadbury World is a visitor centre, not a factory tour, because of strict food regulations. These regulations don’t apply to the winners of the famous Golden Ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Nor do they apply to tickets for Charlie & the Chocolate Factory the musical, whose lucky recipients can take in the full wonders of the Chocolate Factory in full operation and in all its colourful and amazing surrealism.

At Cadbury World the average walk around the exhibition itself lasts about 1 hour 30 minutes, whereas the full musical experience of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical show will last roughly 2 hours 45 minutes, well worth the ticket price.

The walk around Cadbury World is not a guided tour unlike the show Charlie and the chocolate factory where you will get the full guided tour by the irresistible Mr. Willy Wonka himself, and of course his legendary helpers the Oompa-Loompas.

You do need to book tickets for Cadbury World, and in the same way tickets for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory need to be booked in advance. We can answer one or two other questions below:

Are there any discounted rates for either attraction?

You’ll find Cadbury World offering many promotion schemes, including Purple days where you can get two tickets for the price of one. Because Charlie & the Chocolate Factory is a new musical tickets are expected to be in hot demand. Nevertheless there is an option for those looking for a bargain. The show in London is previewing from May 18th 2013 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Its World Premiere is expected to be scheduled for June 25th. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tickets for the previews are generally cheaper, so well worth their purchase. Visitors can experience the magic of the Chocolate Factory before it all gets eaten up!

Are you allowed to bring cameras and camcorders in?

At Cadbury World you can, but you must put them away when in the Packaging Plant. Sadly when it concerns Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, cameras and camcorders are strictly forbidden, because photography can distract the actors and also spoil the enjoyment of the show for other people in the audience. So just bank those memories in your brain and remember to tell the grandkids one day.
