Kinky Boots to march in to the West End
Kinky Boots the hit Broadway musical is rumoured to be coming to London’s West End in 2014. The show is based on the 2005 film of the same name with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper.
The multi-award winning show has been a huge hit on Broadway and around the U.S.A. The show on Broadway received a best ever 13 Tony Award nominations winning 6 categories, including the award for Best Musical as well as Best Score for Cyndi Lauper, making her the first woman to win the composing category solo. Kinky Boots is hugely enjoyable lavish song and dance musical comedy. The book by Harvey Fierstein tells the story of a struggling shoemaker and his drag queen business partner.

Charlie Price grows up as the fourth-generation “son” in his family business, “Price and Son”, a shoe factory in the Midlands, England. Charlie’s ageing father hopes that one day Charlie will take over the family business, but against his wishes Charlie moves to London with his status-conscious and demanding fiancée, Nicola. Charlie’s father dies suddenly, and Charlie inherits the near bankrupt business.
Whilst in London, Charlie finds himself inadvertently involved in a street fracas, where he meets drag performer, Lola, and her troupe of drag queens. Charlie develops a plan to save the business he has inherited by joining forces with drag queen, Lola, to produce custom fetish-type footwear for drag artists rather than the men’s dress shoes that his firm is traditionally known for.
Many of the factory workers are not enthusiastic about the radical change in their product line and many of them give Lola a hard time, although one factory worker, Lauren, has developed a crush on Charlie. Meanwhile his fiancée, Nicola, is resentful of the fact that Charlie won’t sell the factory and settle down to enjoy the good life in London with her.
The story unfolds against the back drop of the mad panic to get the new line in shoes ready for the prestigious Milan fashion shows, with some workers resistance to change and the women in Charlie’s life vying for his attention.
This hilarious show has some fantastic song and dance numbers, spectacular costumes and thrilling over-the-top dance routines with a real feel-good factor. This show is sure to be a sensation in London.
