This will be Russell’s West End stage debut after holding talks with the show’s producer, Sir Cameron Mackintosh. Russell said “I went to see Cameron Mackintosh about doing Les Miserables, we’ve had a good chat about that. It’s something I’d like to do. It would give me a huge amount of satisfaction to play a role like Valjean. I would do it in the West End, towards the end of 2014.”
Russell has been encouraged to take the role by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg and will it is news that will no doubt please the legions of Russell’s fans. Russell added, “Claude-Michel keeps saying, ‘When are you going to do Valjean?’ He said I’d be perfect because I now have the life experience to draw on. Valjean is a tortured soul”.
The world-renown tenor suffered two near-fatal brain tumors the first in 2005 and the most recent in 2007, but he has since gone on to record and release a number of new albums following his recovery.
