Boris Johnson pays tribute

London Mayor, Boris Johnson, paid tribute to The Lion King’s unrivalled success and how much it has benefited the economy in London for the last 15 years.

“Congratulations to The Lion King whose long-run has contributed to the phenomenal success of London theatreland. From the bright lights of the West End, to the dozens of smaller theatres found across the city, it’s a hugely important sector for our economy, generating more than £600 million last year and underlining London’s status as one of the world’s greatest cities for culture,” said the London Mayor.

Licenced school versions

Such is The Lion King’s success and popularity that in January next year Disney will release licensed school versions of the show for the primary and secondary schools. The performances will run for both 30 and 70 minutes and are aimed at teaching students about drama, performance and stagecraft.

A global phenomenon

Since the stage adaptation of the classic Disney film first arrived on Broadway in 1997, it has been performed in six continents and seen by more than 75 million people around the world. Presently, ten productions of The Lion King are being shown across the globe.
