Disney’s The Lion King is now touring selected venues in the U.K. but the show in London continues to play to packed audiences at the Lyceum theatre in the heart of London’s West End.
Based on the Disney animated film, The Lion King premiered on Broadway in 1997 and opened at the Lyceum Theatre in October 1999, now having celebrated 13 successful years in London.
Meanwhile the multiple Tony Award-winning musical The Lion King celebrated its 15th anniversary on Broadway in November 2012. As a tribute the Lion King cast members flipped the switch to turn on the Christmas lights in the U.S. to light up the world-famous Empire State Building’s tower with yellow lights, being the signature colour of the production.

The Lion King transports audiences to a dazzling world that explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music. The show in London features the music from the original film together with three new songs by Elton John and Tim Rice. Additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer.

Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher), The Lion King is only the second show in history to generate five productions running 10 or more years. Translated into seven different languages (Japanese, German, Korean, French, Dutch, Mandarin, Spanish), the show has been performed in 15 different countries on five continents.
The book was adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed “The Lion King” animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay. Directed by Julie Taymor — who became the first woman to ever receive a Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical — The Lion King has become an international hit with productions playing all around the globe. In fact, the Elton John-Tim Rice musical has won over 30 major awards. Those include six Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical; eight Drama Desk Awards; six Outer Critics Circle Awards; two Sir Laurence Oliviers; the Evening Standard Award for Best Theatrical Event; and three Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards.
