The Lion King the musical really proved it is the show for everyone with a recent performance specifically aimed at the autistic.

The first such performance of its kind in London’s West End saw Disney’s The Lion King stage an autistic friendly show at the Lyceum theatre.

The producers, theatre managers and autism charities worked for months on the performance for children and adults who would normally struggle to cope with a trip to the theatre in London.

The Lion King in London followed two such successful shows on Broadway. Demand for the performance on the 14th April 14 was such that a further performance has been scheduled for Sunday 4th May at 1.30 p.m.

Autism affects more than 500,000 people in the U.K. who struggle with communication, changes to their routine and their environment as well as bright lights and loud noises. Which generally prohibits them from enjoying a theatre show.

The staff at the Lyceum Theatre in London, home for the last 16 years to Disney’s The Lion King were specially trained to help them understand the needs of autistic children and adults. Areas of the foyer were designated as quiet and activity areas staffed by autism experts if members of the audience need to leave the auditorium.

The cast themselves were also schooled in what to expect and jarring sounds and strobe lighting in the show was reduced.

The National Autistic Society worked closely with Disney on this special performance to create a friendly and supportive atmosphere for people with autism and their families.

Mark Lever, Chief Executive of The National Autistic Society, said:

“Autism is a serious, lifelong disability and the challenges the condition brings can make it difficult to enjoy activities, such as trips to the theatre that many people take for granted. Making adjustments and training staff can make a huge difference.

We are delighted to be working with The Walt Disney Company on this landmark performance, making The Lion King accessible to more people than ever before. This will be an amazing day out for people with autism and their families”.

Thomas Schumacher, Producer and President Disney Theatrical Productions, said:

“We are so proud to now be presenting the first dedicated autism-friendly performance in the West End, enabling new audiences to enjoy the thrill of musical theatre. We thank our creative staff, the National Autistic Society and the Ambassador Theatre Group, whose hard work and dedication helps make it all possible.

To help make the show as accessible as possible the usual booking fees on tickets were waived.
