The eminent horse racing enthusiast, owner of the Victoria Place theatre and general nice guy, Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen has sold the Victoria Palace theatre in London’s West End to Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s theatre group Delfont Mackintosh.
Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen
Following the announcement in May the deal with shortly be completed and after 23 years at the helm as from Monday 22nd September 2014 the Art Deco theatre in Victoria will be operated by Sir Cameron Mackintosh. So it’s good knight from him and good knight from me, although strictly speaking Sir Stephen isn’t a Knight he is in fact the 2nd Baronet of Honeymead, a title he has held since 1991.
The musical Billy Elliot will continue to play at the theatre and tickets for Billy Elliot are on sale until December 2015.
Sir Stephen is part of the renowned horse racing family, with brother Robert a race-horse trainer and nephew Sam Waley-Cohen the successful jockey, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2011. Sir Stephen has raised enormous amounts of money for charity, including his amazing Golden Horse Shoe ride across the moors of Devon.
The change of ownership, sadly too it means the departure of popular General Manager, the dashing Andrew Mills who leaves his post after 19 years at the theatre.
