We Will Rock You star Ricardo Afonso favourite to win The Voice
Former We Will Rock You star Ricardo Afonso is emerging as the clear favourite to win the BBC’s singing talent show The Voice. With the blind audition stage now at an end the conrestants prepare to battle it out head-to-head as the selected teams are whittled down to just six per coach.
38-year-old Ricardo, is currently starring in Olivier Award winning musical, Top Hat at the Aldwych theatre in London. Winner of the Best Musical at the recently televised Olivier Awards, Ricardo plays the role of Alberto Beddini.

Previously Ricardo starred in the leading role of Galileo in the Queen musical We Will Rock You at the Dominion theatre in London. Ricardo played the role for three years in the show which features over 31 of Queen’s greatest hits, including Radio Gaga, Another One Bites the Dust, Under Pressure, A Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Bohemian Rhapsody and of course, We Will Rock You.
Ricardo’s West End theatre career has also seen him take a part in Ghost the musical and he was lead singer on another BBC show, The Strictly Come Dancing tour.
His role as galileo is to date the highlight of his career and Ricardo starred as part of the We Will Rock You cast at the handover ceremony for the London Olympic games appearing live on BBC in front of Buckingham Palace. He has declared it is still the most exhilarating moment of his career to date, although winning The Voice will perhaps surpass this, especially if Ricardo goes on to secure a recording contract and a string of hits.
Some say that having someone with Ricardo’s background and professional career is unfair to other contestants, but the show is open to all, and it was in the blind auditions that Ricardo came to the fore. With both Tom Jones and The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue vying to coach him. Ultimately Ricardo chose to go with team Danny.
Ricardo already has a number of cast recordings and solo projects to his credit but nothing will prepare him for superstardom that winning the voice will propel him to.
