Olivier and Tony Award winning director John Tiffany brings his multi-Tony Award-nominated production of Tennessee Williams’ classic play The Glass Menagerie to the West End
Michael Esper and Cherry Jones in The Glass Menagerie
Since premiering in the US in 2013, Tiffany’s production has enjoyed a swathe of acclaim, including an incredible run on Broadway, where it received a myriad of Tony Award nominations, followed by a celebrated staging at the Edinburgh International Theatre.
Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie premiered in 1944. The four-character memory play explores one family’s struggle to survive on hopes and dreams.
The Glass Menagerie is considered to be a heart-rending masterpiece, which rocketed Williams’ from playwright anonymity to global renown.
A stellar cast
The Glass Menagerie’s stellar cast will be reprising their roles at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Cherry Jones will step into the shoes of Amanda Wingfield once more, a role which saw Jones nominated for a Tony Award on Broadway. Playing the Gentleman Caller, Brian J. Smith will also reprise his Tony Award-nominated Broadway role. Wingfield and Smith will be joined by fellow Edinburgh International Festival cast members, Michael Esper as Tom and Kate O’Flynn as Laura.
An equally celebrated team is working behind the scenes, including movement directed by Olivier Award-winning choreographer, Steven Hoggett. Hoggett has collaborated with John Tiffany on several occasions, most notably on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
The Glass Menagerie is designed by Bob Crowley, winner of an incredible seven Tony Awards. Lighting in by Natasha Katz, another multi-Tony Award winner, having taken a Tony Award home six times. Sound design is by Olivier and Tony Award-winning Paul Arditti and the production’s music is directed by the highly acclaimed composer Nico Muhly.
A heart-rending family drama
Tennessee’s delicate family drama is filtered through the memory of Tom. The heart-rending story is centred on the struggles of a family surviving on their dreams, with a domineering mother, a daughter lost in her own world, and a son that is desperate to leave.
Boasting stellar reviews, The Daily Telegraph said of this fresh revival of The Glass Menagerie:
“John Tiffany conjures up theatrical magic.”
Whilst the New York Times said:
“Be prepared to have the breath knocked out of you.”
John Tiffany’s The Glass Menagerie is showing at the Duke of York’s Theatre for a limited run in 2017, with previews beginning on 26 January and an Opening Night on 2 February.
