It has been announced the much-loved musical Bend It Like Beckham will play its final performance on the West End on 5 March 2016

The acclaimed musical will kick its last ball in several weeks’ time

The musical opened at the Phoenix Theatre in June 2015. Directed by Gurinder Chadha, who also directed the hit 2002 film, and starring Natalie Dew and Lauren Samuels, the musical has received glowing reviews at the Phoenix Theatre, described at a “bold, beautifully British triumph” by the Daily Telegraph, and as a “joyous hymn to girl power” by the Evening Standard.

Five Star reviews

Gurinder Chandha spoke of how she is “incredibly proud” of everyone involved with the Bend It Like Beckham musical, including the musicians, cast and production and creative teams.

“We opened at the phoenix Theatre to the most amazing five star reviews and we’ve inspired and entertained people of all ages and all backgrounds, something I have not seen in the West End for many years,” Chandha said in a press statement.

Asides topping Best West End Musical in Time Out’s poll, the acclaimed musical was shortlisted for the Evening Standard Radio Two Audience Award for Best Musical.

Natalie Dew, who plays the football-obsessed Jess in the musical, was shortlisted for the Evening Standard’s Newcomer in a Musical Award.

National and international tours in the pipeline

The musical’s producers are believed to be in talks for national and international tours. As Gurinder Chandha said:

“From the responses I have received since we opened there is a genuine hunger for us to tell our story internationally, so as well as planning a UK tour for the show, we are now working on expanding the production for a proposed tour of India to include multiple stadia.”

The final performance of Bend It Like Beckham the Musical will take place on Saturday 5 March, 2016.
