Following critical-acclaim and a hugely successful run at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, the timeless romantic musical Show Boat is sailing into the West End

Show Boat is showing at the New London from April 2016

For the first time in almost 20 years, the much-loved romantic musical Show Boat returns to London theatre, showing at the New London from April 9, 2016 until January 7, 2017.

When it premiered on Broadway in 1927, Show Boat became an immense success, defined as changing musical theatre forever.

Love, loyalty and freedom

The moving and powerful story is set at the turn of the 20th century against the backdrop of America’s Deep South. In a tale of love, loyalty and freedom, Show Boat follows the lives of three generations as they sail aboard a well-known show boat down the Mississippi River.

Directed by acclaimed artistic director Daniel Evans, Show Boat features music by Jerome Kern and a book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The classic score includes timeless songs, such as ‘Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man’, ‘Make Believe’ and ‘Ol’ Man River’.

Talking about the West end transfer, Daniel Evans spoke of the show’s poignant message:

“Show Boat is often thought to be the mother of all musicals. Hammerstein and Kern’s score continues to blow audiences away, almost 90 years later. As well as being a riveting story, the piece’s themes of family and freedom still speak to us today in a profound way. I feel proud that the production we made in Sheffield will now get to travel further afield and be experienced by yet more audiences in the capital,” said Evans.

This passionate production of the enduring and moving musical is showing at the New London from April 9, 2016 until January 7, 2017.

The show runs for two hours 40 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.
