The Hollywood actor Bradley Cooper plays John Merrick in the production, which has been a phenomenal hit in New York.
Inspired by a true story
The Elephant Man is inspired by the true story of a severely deformed man in London in the 19th century called Joseph Merrick. Merrick lives his life as some sort of freak until a high society surgeon Frederick Treves rescues him. The story is centred on Merrick’s relationship with his surgeon Treves.
In 1980 The Elephant Man film was released about Joseph Merrick and was a huge commercial success.
A top Broadway moneymaker
The Elephant Man stage production will play at the Booth Theatre in New York until 22 February. According to reports the production has been one of Broadway’s top moneymakers of the season, which is quite an achievement for a non-musical show.
Bradley Cooper has earned great reviews playing the leading man John Marrick on Broadway.
It has been confirmed that Bradley’s co-stars Patricia Clarkson, who plays Mrs Kendal and Alessandro Nivola as Dr Treves, will be joining the Hollywood star in London.
The production is directed by American stage director Scott Ellis.
The Elephant Man will run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket for 12 weeks from 18 May to 9 August 2015.
