In what has been dubbed as the most highly-anticipated of Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s one-year season, The Entertainer is running at the Garrick Theatre in 2016

The Entertainer will run at the West End

Set in Britain’s post-war world, John Osborne’s play The Entertainer explores explores the seedy glamour of old music halls. The story is centred on Archie Rice, an angry, middle-aged vaudeville hoofer, whose fading career has resulted in him playing in a sleazy seaside show at a deteriorating music hall.

Commenting on problems in the Middle East

The play cleverly comments on the decline of the British Empire and the problems in the Middle East, which of course are as prevalent today as they were in the post-war era.

The role of Archie Rice was originally created by Osborne for Laurence Olivier, at the actor’s own request. The play premiered in 1957 at the Royal Court. There has been several revivals of The Entertainer, the most recent in 2007 at the Old Vic, which starred Robert Lindsay.

An eagerly awaited Branagh performance

Rob Ashford directs what is one of the most anticipated plays of Kenneth Branagh’s five-show season at the Garrick Theatre.

It has been announced that Kenneth Branagh will star in the show in the role of Archie Rice.

The Entertainer will be the last production of Sir Kenneth Branagh’s five-play season at the Garrick Theatre in the West End.

The Entertainer will run at the Garrick Theatre from 20 August 2016 until 12 November 2016.
