At last, it’s official, the iconic Broadway musical hit Dreamgirls is coming to the West End, showing at the Savoy Theatre towards the end of the year…
Uplifting and inspirational: Dreamgirls is coming to the Savoy Theatre
When it opened on Broadway in 1981, the musical celebration of R&B music became a remarkable success story, nominated for 13 Tony Awards and winning six of them.
Such was the success of the musical that it was later adapted into a film. Broadcast in 2006, Dreamgirls the film starred Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy and Danny Glover.
Announced by the Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye, it is now confirmed that the Sonia Friedman Production’s revival of the legendary musical is heading for London, to the Savoy Theatre to be exact!
Amber Riley will play Effie White
And that’s not all. News has also emerged that Dreamgirls will star Amber Riley from the TV comedy drama Glee. The American actress will make her West End debut, playing soul singer Effie White.
With music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and a book by Tom Eyen, Dreamgirls tells an inspiring story of a trio of young female R&B singers from Chicago, known as ‘The Dreams’, and their prolific rise to fame in the Sixties.
The West End revival of Dreamgirls will be directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw.
Celebrating R&B music
Dreamgirls traces the aspirations and successes of R&B over the years, looking at iconic acts such as James Brown, The Supremes, The Shirelles, Jackie Wilson, amongst others.
This West End revival of the classic Broadway musical is coming to the Savoy Theatre in the autumn/winter of 2016. Previews are planned to begin in November.
