With Maureen Lipman described as being at her finest, Charlotte Keatley’s award-winning play that poignantly explores the relationship between mother and daughter is showing at St. James Theatre
Maureen Lipman stars in My Mother Said I Never Should at St. James Theatre
Hailed as “an outstanding piece of theatre”, Charlotte Keatley’s My Mother Said I Never Should examines the often complex relationship between a mother and her daughter and the consequences of breaking the “most sacred taboo of motherhood.”
It is a play which powerfully depicts how the choices we make in life shape our lives but how it’s never too late to change.
The story surrounds Margaret, the daughter of Doris, who in 1900 decides to give up a promising career in teaching for marriage and motherhood. When the war is over Doris’ daughter Margaret marries an American and has a baby who she names Jackie.
Jackie becomes a rebel of the 1960s and finds herself as a single mum. Jackie decides it’s best if her mum brings up baby Rosie as if she was her own. At least that is the plan.
My Mother Said I Never Should has received a string of rave reviews, with Maureen Lipman’s performance described by the Sunday Express as “Lipman has never been better.”
The Times hails My Mother Said I Never Should as “A terrific, bittersweet play and this is a stand-out production”, an accolade shared by the Telegraph, which referred to Charlotte Keatley’s play as “Deeply affecting.”
My Mother Said I Never Should is showing at St. James Theatre from 13 April until 21 May, 2016. The show runs for approximately two hours and 30 minutes.
