It has been confirmed that James Phillip’s highly-acclaimed play McQueen will be making a West End transfer to Theatre Royal Haymarket Theatre this August
McQueen is coming to the Theatre Royal Haymarket
The play received its world premiere in May this year at St James Theatre and quickly went onto break box office records. On Thursday 27 August the moving play that is centred on the visionary imagination of one of Britain’s most iconic of fashion designers, will transfer to the Theatre Royal Haymarket.
The play will remain at its new home for a strictly limited season until November 7, 2015.
It has also been confirmed that Stephen Wright will reprise his role as the legendary fashion designer when the play transfers. Wright will be joined by Carly Bawden who will play Dahlia for the limited run.
Tracey-Ann Oberman will reprise her role as Isabella Blow, as will Laura Rees who plays Arabella.
McQueen is written by James Phillips and directed by John Caird. The play traces the story of a girl who breaks into McQueen’s home in Mayfair to steal a dress made by the designer. Instead of calling the police, McQueen and the girl form a bond and embark on a fairy-tale journey through London and into the fashion designer’s mind, encountering figures from his past – both dead and alive.
Talking about the West End transfer, James Phillips said:
“I’m delighted to have McQueen in the West End, and to take this opportunity to refine some things from the original production. For me, it’s also thrilling that we’re going into the Theatre Royal Haymarket, as it was in this theatre that I had my first ever professional job, a few months after leaving college. I was a peasant – a silent role! – in Miss Julie starring Christopher Eccleston, Aisling O’Sullivan and Maxine Peake that Thelma Holt produced. It really is one of the most beautiful theatres I’ve ever been in.”
The legendary fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen died on 11 February 2010 at the age of 40. The designer founded his own Alexander McQueen label in 2001 and was known for his extraordinary talent and being one of the most innovative designers of recent times.
McQueen’s limited run on the West End will follow the current run of The Elephant Man, which closes at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 8 August 2015.
